Independent calculations of Global Temperatures

The original motivation for independent calculations (like mine) of global temperatures using meteorological data, was to check the validity of the official methods such as  HADCRUT, GHCN, NASA, BERKELEY etc.  In the the past there were significant differences in the results between these groups, and their methodologies were all  different.

7 year evolution of global temperatures

Today though such discrepancies have essentially all disappeared. This is mainly because the various long term temperature data measurements have now all converged, while  methodologies have also improved and stabilised on the same trajectory.

My original idea for calculating global temperatures was to treat the earth as a 3D sphere  and then calculate the average  temperatures (anomalies). In this way the Poles are treated the same as any other pixel. My temperature grid is based on GHCN temperature data for land,  and on  HadSST4 data for the Ocean temperature data. This is illustrated below for July 2024.

Today we have a situation where the major players (CRU, Berkeley Earth, NASA etc) have also all updated their methodologies so that today they too are essentially all the same. They  agree on what homogenised data to use and they consequently reach the same results as each other . They all basically agree that global temperatures have risen on average by 1.5 C since pre-Industrial times.

The human population has risen dramatically over the last century but this increase is now slowing. The big question for the future is whether it will eventually stabilise as predicted with an increasing economic development (as already happened in China).  The alternative of a rapid decrease in living standards is probably far worse for humanity than any “global warming” effect.

World Population Growth

Either way there is a limit to increasing global temperatures on earth set by population growth.  So called clean energy based on renewables (wind & solar) is mostly futile, while Nuclear Power is the only effective zero carbon energy source. The rest is politics.

Meanwhile I will be updating my temperature series less frequently.

The interesting detail, about population growth, is the hidden limits set by the strength of the Storage and Logistics systems used by various countries. The Sudan and Ethiopia feature few railways, few airports, and roads best described as tyre-destroyers.
Even my home country, Canada, has a huge area lacking railways, lacking highway nets as well. The Canadian Arctic Islands are effectively road-free, altho the frozen ocean, in winter, offers an easy route to those skilled in handling the dangers of open leads, and of ice that has been thinned by ocean current working from below. From my 30 years of experience surveying for geophysical contractors, I can assert that winter blizzards can close roads until large snowplows, and even D6 and D7 Cats have shoved the snowdrifts off of the roads.
The Eastern Slopes of the Rockies, and the other ranges of mountains from Alberta west across BC have a web of highways and roads. The supply of electricity decreases as the terrain increases in difficulty.

Yes it It is a beautiful country with kind people.

Gaddafi was also a major financial supporter of the work of the AU !
