COP Information Integrity

We read the following  briefing in the buildup to COP30!

“As we reach the eleventh hour in our rapidly closing window to halt the climate emergency, resisting climate denialists’ war on truth has never been more urgent.

COP30 has announced that climate disinformation and information integrity will be central to climate negotiations for the first time this year.

The pipeline from information integrity to climate action is clear. If decision-makers at the climate summit are to be persuaded to take the swift and bold measures now necessary to preserve humanity’s future, we will need the full force of public opinion behind them.

That requires a population who trusts and believes in the climate science, not the lies peddled by polluters and their allies.”

The time for talk is over. COP30 must turn warm words into strong climate action, or risk humanity’s future.

Unfortunately the bluff may  be over.  Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the COP30 UN climate change conference in Brazil. Their carbon footprint is huge and lots of hot air alone will achieve little.  But is it really so bad ?

Has the number of tropical cyclones increased.  No they have reduced  supposedly due to climate change (Carbon Brief) so that is a good thing ?

Globally, the frequency of tropical cyclones has not increased over the past century, and in fact the number may have fallen – although long-term data is limited in some regions. Surely that is a good thing?

Global sea  Level Rise is estimated to have been  only about  6 inches since the start of the industrial revolution (1900).  However regular tidal  ranges and lunar cycles show far larger effects which  on average reach several meters in magnitude! These  totally dwarf any effects due just  to climate change. Furthermore evidence from Thai and caves (e.g. the rescue of trapped children), and the marooned extensive  sands dunes in Cornwall and elsewhere show that the last interglacial experienced far larger sea level rises of several meters during the most recent previous warm period (Eemian interglacial).

In conclusion there is no immediate “climate emergency”. There is therefore sufficient time to time to develop a low carbon energy source and currently Nuclear power seems to be the only realistic option.Wind and Solar will only help intermittently, need fossil fuel backup, and their lifetime expectancy all makes them far more expensive than advertised.

One Response to COP Information Integrity

  1. Entropic man says:

When a tropical storm forms it requires a sea surface temperature of27c or above.

The amount of time each year that the ocean surface in the relevant areas is increasing, giving more opportunities for storms to form.

If wind shear is too high the storm’s circulation is disrupted and it fails.

Wind shear is increasing, so a smaller % of forming storms will survive to become hurricanes.

Overall the two effects cancel out. The number of hurricanes forming each year is expected to remain the same.
