World Wide Web

The Web was invented at CERN by Tim Berners Lee based on  ‘Hypertext’ linking   information into a structured Web of information together and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). This simple idea eventually exploded onto the Internet creating a rich and evolving structured information source.  This “Web” of information was all based on HTTP ( Hypertext Transfer Protocol ) to link information together and,  HTML to define that information. I was working at CERN at Jet from 1977 to 1980.

What then exploded usage of the Web was the first Web Browser written by Mark Andreessen  called Mosaic. The ease of use combined with with exceptional graphics and dynamic linking revolutionised the Internet.

Everything else:  Search engines like Google, Subject Indexes  and even AI tools can all be linked back to that first big step.
